Algebraic Notation Books (1. e4)
These books use algebraic notation. Variations include short algebraic notation (AN) shown as 1. Nf3, and figurine algebraic notation, where the piece is a figurine instead of a letter. Occasionally, there will be long algebraic notation (LAN), where the origination square and destination square are both given: 1. Ng1-f3.

Descriptive Notation Books (1. P-K4)
These books use descriptive notation. Most commonly, "N" is used for the Knight but occasionally in older books "Kt" is used. These books can be a bit of a challenge to read for those not familiar with Descriptive notation, but often it can be well worth the effort to learn.
